Mareeba Magistrates Court

The Mareeba Magistrates Court is located at 14 Hort Street Mareeba, in Queensland.

Criminal and civil matters are dealt with in the Mareeba Magistrates Court and it is the local court where cases first enter the court system. The Presiding Magistrates sitting at the Mareeba Magistrates Court is Magistrates Braes TJ. The court also provides a Volunteer Justice of the Peace or Commissioner for Declarations service.

The Magistrates Court finalises all summary crime matters (including traffic matters) where the accused is an adult. Summary crime matters where the accused is under 18 are dealt with by the Children’s Court. Serious indictable criminal matters are finalised in the District Court or Supreme Court.

The court calendar sets out the day and time that different types of matter are heard by the Mareeba Magistrates Court. The daily law list provides the name of all matters listed to be heard by the court each day.

The Magistrates Courts at Mount Molloy and Dimbulah were transferred to Mareeba upon these courts being abolished by gazettal proclamation in 1990. The current Mareeba courthouse was constructed to replace an outdated building and is the first stage of a law & order precinct planned to include a police station and watchhouse. The court building is located on a former weather stations site which contains two adjoining heritage-listed buildings.
