Tamworth Local Court

The Tamworth Courts are located on the corner of Marius and Fitzroy Streets in the town’s centre. The Tamworth Courts hear Local Court matters, and when the District Court is on circuit, they also hear District Court matters.

The Local court is the court where all criminal matters commence. It will hear cases about all kinds of criminal and traffic offences, including Assault, Domestic Violence, Drink Driving, and Apprehended Domestic Violence Order applications.

In New South Wales, all criminal matters where the accused is an adult commence in the Local Court. Summary criminal matters including traffic offences are finalised in the Local Court (or in the Children’s Court, if the accused is under 18). Summary matters include offences for which a person has received a penalty or infringement notice or a fine and chosen to have the matter heard by a court. License suspension appeals are also dealt with by the Local Court.

If you have a matter at the Tamworth Courts, make sure you arrive at court well before the time your matter is listed to be heard. You should be neatly and conservatively dressed, and you should be prepared to be at court for most of the day.
