The Queanbeyan Courts are located at 2 Farrer Place Queanbeyan. By car, Queanbeyan is 3.5 hours from Sydney and 20 minutes from Canberra. Both Local and District Court matters are heard at Queanbeyan. The Local Court is permanent, while District Court sittings are generally held over a three-to-four-week period, approximately four times per year.
The Local court is the court where all criminal matters commence. It will hear cases about all kinds of criminal and traffic offences, including Assault, Domestic Violence, Drink Driving, and Apprehended Domestic Violence Order applications. Depending on the seriousness of the offence, a matter may be committed to a higher court, such as the District Court or Supreme Court, later in the proceedings. All traffic law matters and other summary matters are finalised in the Local Court. Queanbeyan Local Court hears local matters as well as those where the offending took place further afield, including Braidwood.
The Queanbeyan Children’s Court, which sits in the same courtroom as the Local Court, deals with criminal matters where the accused is under 18 as well as care and protection matters. The Children’s Court hears matters in closed court, meaning that anyone who is not involved in the matter must leave the courtroom.
On entering Queanbeyan Local Court, you will proceed through security to a seating area. The registry is on the right-hand side. Most matters are dealt with in the one courtroom, the door to which lies in the back right-hand corner of the courthouse, on the ground level.
On arrival, you should generally inform the magistrate’s associate that you are at court. Your matter will be called when the magistrate is ready to deal with it. It is best to wait in the seating area outside the courtroom until your matter is called on.
If you are legally represented, your solicitor will enter the courtroom ahead of you and secure a place at the bar table to mention your matter.
