Newcastle Local Court

The Newcastle Courts are located at 343 Hunter Street, Newcastle. The Newcastle Courts hear Local Court, District Court and Supreme Court matters.

In New South Wales, all criminal matters where the accused is an adult commence in the  Local Court. Less serious criminal cases, known as summary cases, are finalised in the Local Court (or in the Children’s Court if the accused is under 18). These include traffic matters and offences for which a person has received a penalty or infringement notice or a fine and has chosen to have the matter heard by a court. Licence suspension appeals are also dealt with by the Local Court.

The Local Court is the court where all criminal matters commence. It will hear cases about all kinds of criminal and traffic offenses, including Assaults, Domestic Violence, Drinking Driving, and Apprehended Domestic Violence Order applications.

Serious indictable criminal matters are finalised in the Supreme Court or District Court.

If you have a matter in the Newcastle Courts, make sure you arrive at court well before the time your matter is listed to be heard. You should be neatly and conservatively dressed, and you should be prepared to be at court for most of the day.

Street parking near Newcastle Courts is limited. If you are attending court for traffic offences for which the court may impose a licence disqualification period, it is particularly important that you do not drive to court.
